IC-OS Journal Club Webinar: Global longitudal strain and cardiac events in patients with immuno checkpoint inhibitor-related myocarditis

Dr Lenihan has been active in cardio-oncology and heart failure, for over 20 years. The main focus of these efforts have included hemodynamic assessments, angiogenic growth factor response, novel cardiac biomarkers as well as optimal methods to prevent or detect heart failure at the earliest stage possible in patients undergoing treatment for cancer. His current research projects include early phase clinical trials in cardio-oncology, heart failure and amyloidosis. He is the Principal Investigator of the PROTECT study looking at cardiac safety in patients undergoing proteasome inhibitor treatment for relapsed multiple myeloma and the recently completed PREDICT study, a large multicenter prospective study examining the role of cardiac biomarkers for the detection of cardiotoxicity during anthracycline based therapy. In addition, he is intimately involved in the latest treatment trials for cardiac amyloidosis. He was recently at Washington University in St Louis to enhance and expand the Cardio-Oncology Center of Excellence. He is at the forefront of concerted efforts to develop a viable Cardio-Oncology fellowship training program and continues to foster collaboration among a host of colleagues both regionally, nationally, and throughout the world. He is the current President of the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS),www.IC-OS.org, which is an international professional association whose primary goal is to eliminate cardiac disease as a barrier to effective cancer therapy.

Nausheen Akhter, MD is a cardiologist at Northwestern Medicine and an Associate Professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Akhter is the Director of the Cardio-Oncology program at Northwestern. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the Northwestern University in Psychology. She completed her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She completed internal medicine residency at Indiana University, and her fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She returned to Northwestern for an advanced imaging fellowship in echocardiography. Dr. Akhter specializes in echocardiography and cardio-oncology. Her research interests include studying advanced echocardiographic techniques for the early detection of cardiac toxicities from anti-cancer therapies. She has authored several peer-reviewed publications in this area. She has also received numerous teaching awards while at Northwestern. She is on the faculty of the America College of Cardiology and of the American Society of Echocardiography. She holds leadership roles within the American Society of Echocardiography as a member on the board of directors for the American Society of Echocardiography Foundation. Dr. Akhter also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. Additionally, she is a member of the IL-ACC Cardio-Oncology committee and the planning committee for the Chicago City-wide Cardio-Oncology Rounds.
