SENIOR DIRECTOR, GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS, ASTELLAS

Chief Executive Officer, Cancer Australia Professor Dorothy Keefe has led Cancer Australia, Australia’s national cancer agency, since 2019 and has just been reappointed for a second three-year term. Prior to this she had a long and distinguished career as a medical oncologist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), and as Professor of Cancer Medicine at the University of Adelaide, where she remains an Honorary Clinical Professor. She is working clinically one session per week at the RAH as a volunteer during the COVID surge. Her long-term research interest is in Supportive Care in Cancer. She has led cancer services at all levels, as well as health reform in South Australia. She has a Master’s degree in Medical Leadership and a strong interest in advocacy, career development and mentoring. She is committed to patient-centred care, reducing unnecessary variation in cancer outcomes, and to improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by cancer. During her tenure as CEO, she has led the enquiry into Lung Cancer Screening for Australia and is leading the development of the first national Australian Cancer Plan.

Member, Group of Scientific Advisors, European Commission Eva Kondorosi is a molecular biologist and research director at the Biological Research Centre in Hungary. She is member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors of the European Commission, the lead advisor on cancer screening recommendations and the chair of Life Sciences at Academia Europaea. She was Vice President and Life Science domain coordinator of the European Research Council, and member of the UN Secretary General’s Scientific Advisory Board. She has been a founding member and science director of the CNRS Institute of Plant Sciences (Institut des Sciences Végétales), and the founding director of the BAYGEN Institute (Hungary). She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea, Leopoldina, French Agricultural Academy and European Academy of Microbiology. She received several prestigious awards including the Balzan Prize, the Széchenyi Prize and the Prima Primissima prize.

Gavin Lewis is Amgen’s VP Global Value and Access based at the company’s European Hub in Switzerland. Founded in California in 1980, Amgen is a global leader in biotechnology. Gavin originally was an undergraduate in Economics and Politics, before working for the Scottish Government as an Economist in the Health Department. After obtaining an MSc in Health Economics from York University, he joined the Pharmaceutical industry for Roche in the UK where he worked for over 10 years developing and leading their Health Economics and Pricing department. He has experience in leading over 50 Health Technology appraisals and contributed to the development of the NICE Guide to Methods for Technology Appraisal. In 2012 Gavin transferred to Basel to start a new role for Roche as Head of Pricing and Market Access for Region Europe, where he has developed a new team with responsibilities for strategic pricing, payer marketing and real world evidence for Europe. Gavin was then Global Head of Market Access for Oncology at AstraZeneca from 2015-17, before joining Amgen.

He currently serves in the board of directors for the Union International for Cancer Control and as Editor-in-Chief for the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s JCO Global Oncology. He completed medical school at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and residency in internal medicine, chief residency and hematology and medical oncology fellowship at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was assistant professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins University and senior consultant and associate director for clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Center and served as Chief Medical and Scientific Officer for the Oncoclinicas group, the largest oncology provider in Latin America and one of the largest in the world. Dr. Lopes has published more than 200 papers and book chapters in journals such as the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, Nature Reviews, Lancet, Lancet Oncology and Health Affairs. In addition to delivering lectures around the world, he has been principal, co-Principal Investigator or steering committee member in more than 150 studies and clinical trials covering breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and thoracic cancers. His other main areas of research interest are disparities, health economics, value, policy and access to cancer drugs and care in low and middle-income countries.

Isabel T. Rubio is the Co-Chair of the European Cancer Summit 2020, Board Member of the European Cancer Organisation, Prevention Network Co-Chair, Head of Breast Surgical Oncology at Clinica Universidad de Navarra in Madrid, Spain and Professor of Surgery at the Universidad de Navarra, Spain. She completed her Medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine in Salamanca, Spain, and become a Board-certified General Surgeon. She had additional training for two years as a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellow at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Arkansas Cancer Center at Little Rock, USA and for one year at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, USA. She completed her PhD in 2000. She is the director of the Breast Surgery Fellowship program at her Institution. Dr. Rubio is active in many societies, founding member and past President of the Spanish Association of Breast Surgeons (AECIMA), EUSOMA President-Elect (European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists), Chief, Public Affairs of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and member of the Outreach Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). She is the breast section editor of the Journal of Surgical Oncology, reviewer for The Breast, the European Journal of Surgical Oncology and Annals of Surgical Oncology. She obtained the European Board of Surgery Qualification in Breast Surgery and since 2015 is officer at the UEMS Breast Surgery Division and participates as an examiner in the EBSQ Examinations in Breast Surgery. Dr. Rubio is involved as part of the Steering and Executive Committees in several international, multicenter randomized trials. She has received grants to develop her research by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Spanish Ministry of Health and other institutions. Dr. Rubio has published over 100 national and international peer review manuscripts and book chapters. She has presented her work in many of the main international meetings in breast cancer. Her interest is in sentinel lymph node biopsy, neoadjuvant treatments, surgical management of BRCA mutation carriers and the role of prognostic markers (genomic profiles, liquid biopsy). Also her interest is focused on the standardization of Breast cancer surgical training and Breast units.

Jan van Meerbeeck is Board Member, European Cancer Organisation and Prevention Network Co-Chair. After obtaining his medical degree magna cum laude from the University of Antwerp in 1980, Prof van Meerbeeck completed training to become a board certified specialist in internal medicine and pulmonology. He is a skilled interventional pulmonologist and obtained his PhD in 1997 with a dissertation on the presentation of lung cancer in Flanders, Belgium. He is currently professor of Thoracic Oncology at both Ghent and Antwerp University and practiced as pulmonologist at Antwerp University Hospital, Belgium and at Erasmus MC, the Netherlands. He was Chair of the Thoracic Oncology Program at Ghent University Hospital, where he became also Divisional Head and CMO. He is currently appointed full professor in Pulmonology @ Antwerp University and chair of the Pulmonology Department of its academic hospital (UZA). His translational scientific interests include the molecular diagnosis of lung cancer, the management of mesothelioma and the evaluation of volatile biomarkers of asbestos exposure. He is or was the study coordinator or Principal Investigator for numerous international phase 2 and 3 studies in thoracic oncology and respiratory medicine and promoter of several master thesis and PhD students, of which 7 successfully obtained their PhD. Together with Kevin Lamote, he is the founder of the breathomics lab within the Laboratory of experimental medicine and pediatrics (LEMP) @ University of Antwerp. He is furthermore fellow of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and serves its Thoracic Oncology Assembly as current chair and member of the mesothelioma guideline committee. He served the Lung Cancer Group of the EORTC as secretary, chairman and as board member, is a full member of the ASCO and the IASLC (current member of its staging committee), and expert at the Belgian HTA Knowledge Center KCE. He was involved in the development of the ICHOM standard set on Lung cancer and board member of All.Can and All.Can Belgium. He has an extensive presentation and publication track, with more than 300 peer-reviewed articles in various journals and chapters in textbooks. He serves on the review and editorial boards of several international journals, and organized several national and international meetings.

Nicolás González Casares is a Member of the Special Committee on Beating Cancer, a Spanish nurse and politician who was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2019. In parliament, Gonález Casares serves on the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. In 2020, he joined the Special Committee on Beating Cancer. In addition to his committee assignments, he is part of the parliament’s delegation for relations with Japan

Chair, International Kidney Coalition Rachel was appointed Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University Medical Center Utrecht in 2006. She came from a family with an inherited tumoursyndrome and has been active in advocacy for patients with inherited kidney cancer since 2003. She researches how kidney cells are regulated and what goes wrong in the very early steps of kidney cancer. She is the Senior Medical Writer at Medicom Medical Publishers since 2019. She has been chair of the Dutch VHL Organisation since 2009, and an international contact point for Living with Bladder or Kidney Cancer since 2010. Rachel has been Chair of the IKCC since 2014 and represents the IKCC on the EAU Guidelines Committee for renal cellcarcinoma.

Co-Chair of SAPEA Project, Professor of Cancer Prevention, and Director of the Early Detection Institute, University of Cambridge Rebecca Fitzgerald OBE MACantab MD FMedSci EMBO is Professor of Cancer Prevention and Director of the Early Detection Institute at the University of Cambridge and practices medicine as Hon. Consultant in Gastroenterology and Cancer Medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital. Rebecca also leads the Cambridge component of the CRUK International Alliance in Early Detection (ACED). The focus of her research is to investigate the steps in malignant transformation in the oesophagus and stomach and to use this information to improve clinical early detection strategies. Her work to develop and implement the Cytosponge and related biomarker assays for detection of Barrett's oesophagus and associated dysplasia has been awarded a number of prizes including the Westminster Medal, an NHS Innovation prize and the Don Listwin Early Detection Prize. Rebecca has contributed to evidence reviews and policy work around screening including for the Department of Health in the UK and recently for the European Commission. Rebecca enjoys teaching and is a Fellow of Medical Sciences at Trinity College Cambridge.

Head of Medical for International Developed Markets, Pfizer Oncology Faisal is Head of Medical for International Developed Markets at Pfizer Oncology, based out of the UK. He has over 16yrs experience in pharmaceutical medicines development, and has previously held a variety of senior industry leadership roles with Sanofi, GSK, Novartis and BMS, based in the UK, France and the USA. He has extensive experience in late phase drug development, lifecycle management, and drug safety, predominantly in Oncology and Haematology with significant engagement with regulators, HTA bodies and academic co-operative groups globally. He has a specific interest in innovative digital health and novel real world evidence. Faisal graduated in Medicine from Cambridge University, is a member of Royal College of Physicians, and a fellow of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine. Before joining industry, was a practicing clinician in the UK National Health Service.

Professor Mark Lawler is Board Member, European Cancer Organisation and Special Network on the Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer Co-Chair, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor of Digital Health, and Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences, Queen's University Belfast (QUB). Mark is an internationally renowned scientist who has published over 200 papers including key publications in the highest impact journals (New Engl J Medicine, Lancet, Nature Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Cancer Discovery, Nature Comms, Gut). His work has been recognised by numerous national/international awards including the Vander Molen Prize for Leukaemia Research, Ely Lilly Prize, St Lukes Medal for Cancer Research, Graves Medal for Medical Research and the prestigious 2018 European Health Award. Mark is Associate Director of Health Data Research Wales-Northern Ireland, one of 6 Health Data Research UK (HDR-UK) Substantive Sites, which is driving innovative precision medicine and population health approaches through the use of Big Data. He is Scientific Director for DATA-CAN, the UK Health Data Research Hub for Cancer. In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal, Mark led a pan European group in developing a roadmap to restore public trust in health data, published in Lancet Oncology. In the context of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Mark is employing a data-driven approach to understand and mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on cancer patients and cancer systems Mark was co-chair of the Cancer Task Team of the Clinical Working Group of the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, an international cooperative dedicated to effective and responsible sharing of genomic/clinical data. He authored a number of key papers, including a blueprint for cancer data sharing (Nature Medicine) and a call to action for a Global Cancer Data Knowledge Network (New Engl J Med). Mark is the Queen's Lead of the £5M Medical Research Council-Cancer Research UK funded Stratified Medicine in Colorectal Cancer Consortium (S:CORT), a UK-wide consortium investigating novel precision medicine approaches in colorectal cancer (CRC). His international reputation in CRC was instrumental in his leading a Critical Gaps in CRC Research Initiative, published in the high impact factor journal Gut; this landmark publication has attracted significant global attention (his podcast had the most “hits” of any article in the journal). Mark is a member of the Board of the European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM) and led the development of EAPM’s research strategy. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Cancer Patient Coalition and of the Strategic Advisory Board of Genomics England. Mark has a strong commitment to patient-centred research/care and to addressing cancer inequalities. He was architect of the European Cancer Patient's Bill of Rights (BoR), a catalyst for change and empowerment tool for cancer patients which he launched in the European Parliament on World Cancer Day 2014. The BoR has been translated into 17 European languages and adopted in 25 European countries. It was recently adopted by ECCO, the largest interdisciplinary cancer organisation in Europe. The BoR received The 2018 European Health Award, a prestigious award for partnerships that yield real health impact in Europe which Mark received with ECCO colleagues during the 2018 European Health Forum Gastein, the premier European health policy conference. Mark’s has a particular interested in addressing cancer challenges in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and has highlighted the need for data-enabled research, including economic evaluation to empower cancer control strategies in the region. He is also committed to optimal pathology and laboratory medicine provision for citizens in resource-limited settings and was senior author of a paper in The Lancet as part of The Lancet Series on Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Low- and Middle- Income Countries. He is leading the Lancet Oncology Groundshot Commission to provide the evidence base and road map for cancer research in Europe, with a particular focus on CEE countries, whose results will feed into the EU cancer mission.

Dr Mirjam Crul is Board Member, European Cancer Organisation, Special Network on the Impact of COVID-19 on Cancer Co-Chair and Workforce Network Co-Chair. Shereceived her master in pharmacy in 1999. Subsequently, she worked as a research fellow at the Netherlands Cancer Institute studying clinical pharmacology of novel anticancer agents. This work resulted in a PhD in 2002. She trained to become a Hospital Pharmacist from 2002-2006. Currently she is employed in the Amsterdam University Medical Center, where she is the Head of the Aseptic Compounding Unit and has pharmaceutical responsibility for the Oncology Department. She served as a Board Member for the Dutch Hospital Pharmacists Association (NVZA) from 2016 to 2019. At present, she holds a chair in the European Cancer Organisation Board and is Vice-President of the European Society of Oncology Pharmacy (ESOP).

EUPATI fellow with significant experience in patient advocacy, patient education and service provision in the field of cancer. Before joining Lymphoma Coalition in 2017, she had successfully held Patient and Public affairs roles in cancer charities in Spain since 2011, was appointed Board Member of ECPC from 2016 to 2017 and is currently member of the EHA´s European Affairs Committee, the ESMO Patient Advocacy Working Group and the EBMT Patient Advocacy Committee. She is also member of the GoCART Coalition and contributes to other projects at European level, as Harmony Alliance and Resilience. Natacha has worked at a national and European level with multi-stakeholder partnerships, educational groups, and she is deeply committed to improving the quality of life for patients. She has contributed with HTA processes and is frequently invited to provide the patient perspective in different scenarios. In addition to the role at EU level, she is currently member of the Institutional Working Group on the Plan to Access Advanced Therapies in the National Health System in Spain. Natacha holds a degree in Cancer Rehabilitation Through Exercise Referral.

Director of the Division of Country Health Policies and Systems, WHO Regional Office for Europe. Dr Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat is a medical doctor, a specialist in public health, and the author of several publications in public health and European health policy. Following her qualification as a medical doctor from the University of Malta in 1995, Dr Azzopardi-Muscat worked in various areas in the health sector in Malta, including maternal and child health, mental health, and primary care. Her transdisciplinary research bridging health policy, European studies and small states studies led to her PhD entitled “The Europeanisation of health systems: a small state perspective”. Since 1999, Natasha has been a resident academic at the University of Malta, teaching in the department of health services management and public health. In 2003, she completed her specialization in public health medicine and obtained her membership in the Faculty of Public Health of the United Kingdom. Between 2001 and 2013, she occupied various senior positions in the Ministry of Health in Malta, including that of Chief Medical Officer. Before joining WHO, Dr Azzopardi-Muscat served as President of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) from 2016 to 2020, where she was actively involved in health advocacy at the European level. Dr Azzopardi-Muscat is married to Dr Conrad Azzopardi, a practicing physician, and has 3 children.

Dr André Ilbawi is a medical doctor, specialized and double-board certified in surgical oncology. Dr Ilbawi joined the World Health Organization in 2015 and now serves as the focal point for the cancer programme at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In his current position, Dr Ilbawi is responsible for implementation of the 2017 World Health Assembly resolution on cancer prevention and control. He was executive editor of the 2020 WHO Report on Cancer and has supported additional WHO publications on broad topics ranging from guidance on cancer prevention to access to cancer health products. Dr Ilbawi also led the development of the WHO/IARC priority setting tool for cancer control, workforce optimization strategies and other tool to support capacity building. He led the launch of supports WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (2018) and now being implemented in 30+ countries as well as supported the launch of WHO Global Breast Cancer Initiative (2021) and implementation of WHO Cervical Cancer Initiative (2019).

General Surgery trainee, National Bowel Cancer Audit, Royal College of Surgeons of England Jemma is a speciality registrar doctor in Breast Surgery in North West London and Clinical Research Fellow for the National Bowel Cancer Audit within the Clinical Effectiveness Unit at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She has recently completed her PhD at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The thesis involves the use of large routinely collected datasets to explore the use and outcomes of multimodal treatment for colorectal cancer, with a particular focus on systemic anti-cancer therapy. Through the NBOCA she is involved with a number of other projects including an international colorectal cancer collaborative. She has been involved with work evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on colorectal cancer care, and also work looking the volume-outcome relationship for rectal cancer.

Associate Professor and Dermatologist, Erasmus MC Cancer Institute and Chairperson of Tumor Focus Group Melanoma Marlies Wakkee is an associate professor and dermatologist at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute in Rotterdam. She is the chairperson of the European Dermato-Epidemiology Network, the Epidemiology and Clinical Research Task Force of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology(EADV) and of the Dutch Melanoma and Skin Cancer Group – Tumor Focus Group. She is the principal investigator of various skin cancer related projects focusing on improving the quality and efficiency of dermato-oncological care. An aim that is triggered by the steeply rising skin cancer incidence, both affecting patients and healthcare systems. Her main research lines are identification of high-risk squamous cell carcinoma patients through multilevel data integration, the development, implementation and evaluation of artificial intelligence in the diagnostic trajectory of skin cancer patients and the development and implementation of personalized information for skin cancer patients. She has published over than 70 articles in international peer reviewed medical journals and contributed to the EADV Policy Roundtable Towards earlier detection of skin cancer in Europe Report.

Executive Board Member Young Cancer Nurse, EONS Nikolina is MSn cancer nurse from 2010. She works as a lead nurse and shift manager of the subdepartment for oncology and radiotherapy in University Hospital Center Osijek, in inpatient Unit with adult patients ongoing chemo, immuno and radiation therapy, as well as acute oncology and end of life care. From 2015, she is working also at the J.J.Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatia, as a teaching assistant and mentoring nursing students on cathedra for nursing and palliative care. During this period she got her bachelor degree in nursing and also in 2017 she got her Master’s diploma in Nursing science. Currently she is a PhD student at Cyprus University of Oncology at the Department for Nursing. She is a Secretary, Co-founder and Executive Board Member of Croatian Oncology Nursing Society. She is also EONS and ESMO member. During the 2020, in collaboration and with the support of National Society, she established a Young Cancer Nurses Network in Croatia, and started education for young cancer nurses, admitted and approved by Croatian Nursing Council. In December 2020, she has been elected as EONS YCN Co-Chair. In May 2021. she has been elected as EONS Executive Board Member Young Cancer Nurse, and also representing EONS in ECO on Quality of Cancer Care and IST4HEALTH Interact EU project contributing to several work packages as well as PrEvCan project. She is passionate about oncology nursing, evidence based clinical practice, student mentoring, nursing and patient education, research, alongside with direct patient care.

Global Access Policy Leader, Roche Sebastian Arias works as a Global Policy Leader at Roche where he is currently leading the company’s engagement strategy to Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, a main priority in the area of health for the European Commission. He has held a number of global and affiliate leadership positions within the pharmaceutical industry in the area of Policy and Public Affairs. In his various roles Sebastian has supported the evolution of Roche’s work with Global Health institutions like the World Bank, EFPIA and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). In addition, he led the company’s strategy for Access Accelerated and City Cancer Challenge, two global public-private partnerships focused on fighting Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). Before joining Roche, Sebastian worked for Janssen, the pharmaceutical division of Johnson & Johnson, as the Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager for the Latin American North region. A native of Cali, Colombia, Sebastian holds a degree in Communications and Political Science, a Master in Humanitarian Rights from Javeriana University and an Executive Certificate on Advocacy in International Affairs from the Graduate Institute Geneva (IHEID). He is currently located in Basel, Switzerland.

Jan Geissler is EU Cancer Mission Assembly Member and Member of the European Cancer Organisation's Patient Advisory Committee, he is the founder and CEO of Patvocates, a think tank, consultancy and social enterprise on patient advocacy, health policy and patient engagement in research. He was the Director of the European Patients Academy (EUPATI) from 2012-2017 and still leads the German EUPATI platform. Jan is a work package leader of the IMI2-funded EU project HARMONY on big data for better outcomes in hematology. Academic Clinical Oncologist, University of Leeds, United Kingdom Katie is an Academic Clinical Oncologist whose research focusses on bringing together routine healthcare data and health economic methods to improve the equity and value of cancer care. Her MRC funded PhD considered the use, quality of life outcomes and cost-effectiveness of palliative radiotherapy for bone metastases. Since completing this, amongst other projects, she has been collaborating with colleagues from ESTRO-HERO and the Royal College of Radiologists to develop an understanding of the cost of radiotherapy in the NHS and has assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on English NHS radiotherapy delivery. Michail Ignatiadis, Chair of the Breast Cancer Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Michail Ignatiadis, MD PhD is senior attending physician at the Medical Oncology Department, Jules Bordet Institute (IJB) and associate professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Since January 2021 is the chair of the Breast Cancer Group of the EORTC. He is also leading the Academic Trials Promoting Team (ATPT) and he is member of the Executive and Research Boards of IJB since October 2016. He participates in developing the IJB research strategy. He works with his team and members of the Executive and Research Boards to promote high-quality, innovative, academic research at the institutional level. From June 2018 to January 2021, he served in the Board of Directors of the EORTC as the chair of the clinical research division. He has been involved in many investigator initiated trials (IITs) sponsored by IJB at different stages of their development. He has been member of the Independent data monitoring committees for international trials and study chair of several IITs. He served as IJB principal investigator for many industry sponsored trials. Currently, he is the study chair of the Alexandra/Impassion030 registration trial. He is particularly interested in drug and biomarker development in breast cancer. His work in the field of blood-based biomarkers is widely recognized at the international level. Penile Cancer Survivor Patrick’s background in corporate sales and leadership did little to prepare him for a trio of cancers. Starting with prostate cancer, followed by a rare and virulent penile cancer then rounded off with kidney cancer. This unwanted journey has made him realise that the impact of these rarely discussed male cancers and HPV goes far beyond that of the men themselves but extends to their partners, family and colleagues equally. He is passionate that these diseases become part of the world's conversation and that all GP’s should have the appropriate training to identify penile and testicular cancer at the earliest opportunity to ensure quicker treatment and hence, many more positive outcomes. Patrick’s unique experience and perspective, gained from multiple treatments combined with twenty years of public speaking can motivate people and organisations to engage in the challenge of making a lasting and positive change. He is currently well, living with his wife off Penny Lane in Liverpool and enjoying life to the fullest possible extent.

He obtained his first degree in law at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, in 2006, magna cum laude. He then obtained a Masters of Law (LL.M.) specialising in European Union Law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), Belgium, in 2009, magna cum laude. He defended his PhD at KUL, dealing with free movement of cross-border health care services in the EU and its impact on national health insurance systems in 2014. He was an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Science and Education in 2017, after which he became a Member of the Croatian Parliament. He was a Member of the Croatian Parliament until July 2019, when he became a Member of the European Parliament. He is a Member of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO), Special Committee on the COVID-19 pandemic: lessons learned and recommendations for the future (COVI) and also EPP Vice Coordinator in COVI Committee, and a Substitute Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Committee on Regional Development (REGI) in the European Parliament.
