Episode 5 - Stroke Prevention in AFib

Details

This activity is funded by Bayer AG and is not intended for a UK audience

In part V of the course in pharmacotherapy in atrial fibrillation (AF) we will discuss stroke prevention in AF, the well-known algorithm that physicians utilize to predict the risk of embolic stroke, using the CHADS-VASc score, and the risk of bleeding complications, using the HASBLED score. However, one must realize that the predictive value of both scores is hampered by the fact that three of the most contributing risk factors are listed in both, a fact that waters out their usefulness. There are surprisingly more well-known risk factors for, e.g., embolic stroke, and we will discuss in depth where the future most likely will take us, integrating biomarkers for risk assessment, and thus steering towards precision medicine.
