Dr. Van Spall obtained Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees, and postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Echocardiography at the University of Toronto. She then obtained a Master of Public Health degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. She is appointed in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University.

Manesh Patel is the Chief of the Division of Cardiology and the Division of Clinical Pharmacology. His clinical interests include diagnostic and interventional coronary angiography, peripheral angiography and endovascular intervention. His is involved in several clinical trials involving patients with cardiovascular disease and in cardiac imaging. He is also the Chair of the American College of Cardiology Task Force for Appropriate Use Criteria for Cardiovascular Procedures and is Chair of the American Heart Association Diagnostic and Interventional Cath Committee. Patel's interest in cardiac imaging, quality of care, cardiac devices is also evident in his research. His integration of these efforts into his roles at Duke was recognized in 2010 when he received the prestigious Duke Cardiology Fellowship Mentor Award. In 2011, Dr. Patel was named the endowed John Bush Simpson Assistant Professor of Cardiology. In 2013, Dr. Patel received the Robert M. Califf Faculty clinical research Award. Currently, Dr. Patel is leading an effort to redesign the delivery of care to patients undergoing invasive catheterization procedures in the health system with a specific aim of measure and providing individualized, patient centered, innovative, and efficient care.

I am striving to become a clinical and research leader in structural heart disease and complex coronary disease, specifically in the use of antithrombotic agents after structural heart interventions. I will also explore the significance of bleeding/vascular complications and stroke in these patients as well as potential therapies such as transfusion, and embolic protection devices.

Nancy K. Sweitzer, MD, PhD, is director of the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Cardiology in the UArizona College of Medicine - Tucson. She is a board-certified advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist and clinical researcher, specializing in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplant patient care. Nationally recognized for her leadership and experience in clinical trials, Dr. Sweitzer also is co-director of the UArizona Health Sciences Graduate Program in Clinical Translational Sciences. Her research program focuses on interaction of the dysfunctional heart muscle in heart failure with other body systems to better understand how to improve symptoms and organ function in heart failure patients. She has done extensive work on the physiology of heart failure with preserved systolic function, a disease that disproportionately affects elderly women. She has led and collaborated on numerous studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health as well as studies supported by industry and academic sponsors. She has served on numerous NIH committees and currently serves as a member of the Clinical and Integrative Cardiovascular Science Study Section and the American Heart Association's Cardiac Biology and Regulation Committee. Dr. Sweitzer was named editor-in-chief of Circulation: Heart Failure, as of July 1, 2017. One of the most widely respected cardiology journals published, its impact ranking is 11 out 139 journals. She is a liaison to the AHA’s Heart Failure & Transplantation Committee of the Council on Clinical Cardiology for a term from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2019. Previously at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dr. Sweitzer was Director of numerous programs, including clinical research, quality, and medical director of heart failure and transplant cardiology. She also led the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program.

Nicolas Van Mieghem is the Clinical Director of Interventional Cardiology and Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam. He obtained his medical degree and cardiology degree at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. After subsequent Fellowships in interventional cardiology in at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg Genk, Belgium, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, United States and Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he joined the senior staff of the department of interventional cardiology in the Thoraxcenter in February 2010. Professor Van Mieghem’s academic interest is in complex (calcified) coronary lesions, mechanical circulatory support and structural heart interventions. He obtained a PhD based upon his research in transcatheter valve therapies. Professor Van Mieghem is involved in the percutaneous coronary interventions and structural heart program. Professor Van Mieghem has published and co-authored over 400 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is principle investigator and steering committee member in multiple ongoing international trials evaluating various coronary and transcatheter valve technologies. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.
