As the oldest fellows’ society in the world (est. 1948!) our educational offering benefits from a unique perspective, informed by our annual members’ survey and collaboration with colleagues across the world. Our increasingly diverse programme is therefore united by a single common theme: education designed by trainees, for trainees.

Professor Jane Somerville is a British Emeritus Professor of Cardiology, Cardiologist to Britain's first heart transplantation in 1968, founder of the first World Congress of Paediatric Cardiology and the Somerville Foundation, and pioneer of the Grown-Up Congenital Heart Disease (GUCH) as a sub-specialty. She recognised the unmet need of the increasing number of adolescents and adults who were now surviving the heart conditions they were born with, thus founding the concept of GUCH. Following her education at Guy's Hospital Medical School, where she became the first female surgical house officer working under Lord Brock, she chose to pursue a career in cardiology at the National Heart Hospital, Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormond Street and later at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Professor Somerville is the recipient of multiple awards and honours including the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology and is known internationally for her unbridled determination and leading the way for women in cardiology.

Nikhil is a Cardiology/Electrophysiology SpR at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, UK . He is undertaking his PhD at Queen Mary University of London in AF and heart failure. with a Clinical Research Training Fellowship from Barts Charity. He is also the trial director of the AFFU-AW and CSAF-AW studies and NIHR Associate PI of the latter. He is the Academic and Research Lead for the British Junior Cardiologists Association and host the sOOPR podcast for doctors thinking about research.

Very candid comments from Professor Somerville - she is a symbol of resilience for all to have survived such toxic culture at work and the hideous misogyny. Not only she has survived, she came across as a fighter and now is in a position to advocate for junior doctors’ voices against bad practices in different Trusts. Should be on the watch list for all trainees!
