Known as the ILUMIEN IV trial, this major clinical study is evaluating Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to guide coronary stent placement. He is also the principal investigator of DEFINE PCI, an international study on assessing the improvement in blood flow after stent placement for severe coronary blockages.

He is the author of more than 1000 peer reviewed articles, 60 book chapters, 4 books, and 850 abstracts concerning various aspects of clinical cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, hemodynamics, cardiac radiology and coronary arteriography, interventional cardiology, and (especially) intravascular imaging and physiology. In 2005, Dr. Mintz published his single-authored textbook Intracoronary Ultrasound that has now been translated into Chinese. In 2014, Dr. Mintz received the Master of the Masters Career Achievement Award at the TCTAP-Cardiovascular Summit in Seoul, Korea; in 2015 Dr. Mintz received the Chien Foundation Outstanding Lectureship & Lifetime Achievement Award, also presented at TCTAP-Cardiovascular Summit in Seoul, Korea; in 2017 Dr. Mintz received the Outstanding Achievement Award at CBS 2017, Nanjing, China; in 2018 Dr. Mintz received the Career Achievement Award at NFIC in Krakow, Poland; and in 2020 Dr. Mintz received the Jiangsu Friendship Award from the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, China, the highest award presented to a non-Chinese. He also serves as a Senior Scientist and Advisor at the Medstar Cardiovascular Research Network, Washington, DC. Dr. Mintz completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and received his medical degree from Hahnemann University (now part of Drexel University), in 1974, both in Philadelphia, PA. He is a regular TAVI operator and certified implanter for the Medtronic Evolut R and Edwards Sapien 3 transcatheter aortic valves. He participated in more than 160 MitraClip implantations in London and Florence and has recently started direct annuloplasty with the CardioBand. Professor Di Mario pioneered the use of intracoronary Doppler, pressure measurement, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and near infrared spectroscopy. He was PI of the OPTICUS trial, failing to demonstrate superiority of IVUS guided stenting, and of the Lipid Rich Plaque study, due to report at TCT 2018. He was Principal Investigator of the DESTINI trial, using Doppler CRF to identify lesions in need of stenting, and of the CARESS in AMI trial, a large multicentre trial showing that patients who receive fibrinolytic therapy for ST-elevation myocardial infarction benefit from early angioplasty. This trial and a subsequent meta-analysis have led to a change in the European Society of Cardiology and AHA/ACC Guidelines for treatment of STEMI patients. He cooperated with Dr Davies to the validation of iFR to assess lesion severity and discriminate the contribution of individual lesions, and with Dr Lyon in the intracoronary delivery of SERCA-2 genes via adenoviral vectors in the CUPID2 trial.

This centre has the largest volume for coronary stents in the UK and his cardiology training in two continents exposed him to a high volume of interventional cardiology procedures including complex cardiac intervention, acute emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (i.e. emergency intervention for heart attack), advanced multimodal coronary imaging, structural heart interventions and novel invasive therapies for resistant hypertension. During his time in Glasgow, he developed his research interest in coronary artery disease performing an internationally recognized clinical trial involving invasive physiological testing for angina patients helping to improve their quality of life. His PhD was submitted in 2019 to the University of Glasgow and won the Bellahouston Medal as the highest distinction for the excellence of theses submitted for the degrees of MD, DDS and PhD. This work is directly relevant to help diagnose and manage patients with angina, chest pain and/or breathlessness. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and a Senior Lecturer at University of Newcastle (NSW). Dr Ford is an invited speaker and faculty at leading international cardiology scientific sessions including EuroPCR, Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT in USA) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC congress). His research has been published in leading cardiology journals and was recently recognized with two accolades including EuroPCR Best Abstract (Winner PCR’s Got Talent) and from the British Cardiac Society (‘Best of the Best’ Clinical Abstract – Interventional Cardiology). Dr. Rosenfield is the Section Head for Vascular Medicine and Intervention, who specializes in complex cardiac and vascular interventions and directs the program for treatment of acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) in the cardiac catheterization laboratories. He has spearheaded the development of less-invasive therapies for patients with coronary and vascular disease, both at MGH and nationally, including treatment of Carotid, Kidney, and Leg artery narrowing using stents and other novel devices.
