Optimizing PCI (O-PCI): Intravascular Imaging & Coronary Physiology workshop

Dr. Evan Shlofmitz is an Interventional Cardiologist and the Director of Intravascular Imaging at St. Francis Hospital - The Heart Center in Roslyn, NY. He completed a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He previously completed an Intravascular Imaging and Physiology fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) and Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), a Cardiovascular Disease fellowship at Northwell Health and served as Chief Resident for Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Queens. He serves on SCAI's IHD Council and is a co-director of Optimizing PCI (OPCI). His research interests have centered on intravascular imaging, the treatment of calcified coronary artery disease, in-stent restenosis and the optimization of stent implantation, with more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Richard A. Shlofmitz, MD, FACC is the Chairman of Cardiology at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®, in Roslyn, New York. A pioneer in interventional cardiology, Dr. Shlofmitz has worked to advance the field, with a focus on optimizing outcomes with the development of Precision PCI. He is a founding co-director of the annual Intravascular Imaging and Coronary Physiology Workshop. Performing over 1,000 coronary interventions annually, he has one of the largest volumes of experience in PCI. He has the most clinical experience with orbital atherectomy and OCT world-wide. His clinical research interests focus on optimizing coronary interventions and he serves on multiple scientific advisory boards and clinical trial steering committees to further this mission. Dr Shlofmitz has been one of the largest enrollers for multiple clinical trials, including TWILIGHT, ILUMIEN III, and Onyx, with more than 75 publications in peer-reviewed journals and was first to perform coronary intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) in North America as part of the DISRUPT CAD III trial.

Dr. Natalia Pinilla is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine Division of Cardiology at McMaster University and currently an Interventional Cardiology Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences and Niagara Health. She is the Cath Lab Director at Niagara Health and the Program Director of the Intravascular Coronary Imaging Fellowship in McMaster University. Dr. Pinilla has trained national and international interventional cardiologists in Complex Coronary Interventions and Intracoronary Imaging. She leads educational programs and academic activities worldwide; and has become a career mentor for international trainees.

Gregg W. Stone, MD, FACC, MSCAI is an interventional cardiologist and Director of Academic Affairs for the Mount Sinai Heart Health System and Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and Professor of Population Health Sciences and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY. Dr. Stone has served as the national or international principal investigator for more than 120 national and international multicenter randomized trials (many of which have led to new device approval or indications in the US), has authored more than 2000 manuscripts and abstracts published in the peer-reviewed literature, and has delivered thousands of invited lectures around the world. With a 2018 H-factor of 152, Dr. Stone was recently listed in Nature Medicine as one of the most prolific authors in science. Dr. Stone's areas of expertise include interventional therapies of acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction and cardiogenic shock; drug-eluting stents and bioresorbable scaffolds; left main and complex coronary artery disease intervention; antiplatelet and antithrombotic pharmacotherapies; transcatheter valve repair and replacement; interventional hypertension and heart failure therapies; left atrial appendage closure; intravascular imaging (IVUS, OCT and NIRS); vulnerable plaque diagnosis and treatment; adjunctive interventional devices including atherectomy, distal embolic protection, thrombectomy, covered stents, chronic total occlusion devices, and brachytherapy; saphenous vein graft therapies; contrast nephropathy; clinical trial design; and regulatory issues. Dr. Stone is the director of TCT, the world's largest symposium devoted to interventional cardiology and vascular medicine. Dr. Sheth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University. He is a Principal Investigator for Acute Coronary Syndrome/Interventional Cardiology Program at the Population Health Research Institute. His research interest is in invasive and non-invasive coronary imaging modalities. He has served as chair of national meetings focusing on coronary optical coherence tomography imaging and is the Director of McMaster University’s Fundamentals of Coronary Optical Coherence Tomography Training Course.

Francesco Prati, MD, is Director of a Research center with dedicated core lab since 1998 matured great expertise in the central core-lab lecture of ECG, ECHO, QCA, IVUS, NIRS and angiographic microcirculatory index (TIMI, TFC, MPG) and in the development, validation and clinical application of novel intravascular imaging modalities, such as Optical Coherence Tomography and IVUS-derived techniques, to study plaque vulnerability.

Matthew Price, MD, is Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and a member of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California. Dr Price earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he held the position of Chief Fellow. Dr Price completed his training in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California. Dr Price’s clinical and research focus includes interventional approaches to structural heart and coronary disease. He has led several clinical trials in PCI, and currently serves on the Steering and/or Executive committee of clinical trials evaluating antiplatelet therapy, novel drug-eluting stents, intravascular imaging, and left atrial appendage closure. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the ACC NCDR Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) registry. He has been twice awarded the Scripps Clinic Chairman’s Award for Research in Medicine. Dr Price serves as Editor-in-Chief of Interventional Cardiology Clinics and is a Section Editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, He has authored or co-authored more than 140 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, the European Heart Journal, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He is also Editor of the seminal text-book, “Coronary Stenting”.

Dr. Franco Fabbiocchi graduated from the University of Milan in 1979 and specialized in Cardiology in 1981. From December 1981 he began to carry out his clinical and research activities at the Monzino Cardiology Center, initially at the Coronary Intensive Care Unit and since 1986 in the Hemodynamics Laboratory. Since 1992 he has been in charge of the U.O. of Diagnostic Cardiology I, retaining the role of senior hemodynamist in the field of invasive and interventional cardiology. Since 1995 he has been a professor at the first School of Specialization in Cardiology of the University of Milan. During these years he has participated in numerous clinical research studies, from which over 200 publications have been derived. The research activity mainly concerned the study of the coronary circulation, both from a pathophysiological and therapeutic point of view.

Prof Andrew Sharp qualified from Edinburgh Medical School in 1998 and is Professor of Cardiology at the University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff University in the U.K. He conducted his early training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, before moving to London for his senior clinical training. He completed the prestigious Milan-Imperial Interventional Cardiology Fellowship programme, having spent a year in San Raffaele and Columbus Hospitals, Milan, Italy, under the tutelage of Professor Antonio Colombo. He also spent three years training in interventional cardiology at Imperial College Hospitals in London. Prof Sharp was awarded an MD postgraduate research degree from the University of Edinburgh for his work on the hypertensive heart and his research interests include intracoronary imaging and physiology. as well as the use of device-based treatments for hypertension and pulmonary embolism.

Dr. Kevin J. Croce is an interventional cardiologist and the director of the Chronic Total Occlusion Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) who also directs the BWH Translational Discovery Laboratory which is a centralized research facility that uses state-of-the-art technology to perform preclinical testing of promising therapies and medical devices. Dr. Croce received his medical and Ph.D. degrees from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency, a cardiology fellowship and an interventional cardiology fellowship at BWH. Dr. Croce is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. His clinical interests include advanced treatments for obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), and optimization of antithrombotic and antiplatelet pharmacotherapy. The author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Croce’s research focuses on understanding the molecular pathobiology of atherothrombotic (CAD) and on identifying new targets for CAD treatment. His research has received support from the National Institutes of Health.

Ziad Ali is the Director of the DeMatteis Cardiovascular Institute, Director of Investigational Interventional Cardiology, and Director of Cardio-nephrology at St Francis Hospital & Heart Center in New York. He is also Director of the Angiographic Core Laboratory at Cardiovascular Research Foundation and Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. His clinical research interests focus on the use of intravascular imaging and physiology technologies such as optical coherence tomography, intravascular ultrasound, and flow wire assessment to optimize coronary interventions, for which he has served as a Global principal investigator on a number of trials. Dr. Ali is also a recognized innovator, playing an integral role in the development of the Resting Full-Cycle Ratio (RFR) and Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy. Clinically Dr. Ali developed pioneering techniques to perform vascular interventions without contrast administration, including IVUS-guided zero-contrast PCI and OCT using saline flush media, protecting patients with advanced kidney disease from acute kidney injury and the need for dialysis.

An internationally recognized interventional cardiologist, Dr. Moses has performed more than 15,000 interventional procedures, authored over 600 publications, and served as lead investigator for numerous national and international clinical studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of coronary stent placement. In 2002, Dr. Moses was the lead investigator on a large clinical trial, the first in the U.S. that demonstrated the enormous benefit that led to FDA approval of the first drug-coated stent now used in the majority of interventional procedures in the U.S. Most recently in on the Executive Committee of PARTNER trial; they brought the first transcatheter aortic valve to clinical use in the U.S. He currently serves as Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Therapeutics at Columbia University Medical Center and as Director of Advanced Cardiac Interventions at St Francis Hospital and Heart Center in Roslyn, NY. He is also a pioneer in developing approaches involving minimally invasive surgery, angioplasty, gene therapy, novel imaging technologies and various support devices that allow for wider application of interventional cardiovascular procedures.

Gary S. Mintz, MD, is a Senior Medical Advisor at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF, New York, NY) and a Director of Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT). He is the author of more than 1000 peer reviewed articles, 60 book chapters, 4 books, and 850 abstracts concerning various aspects of clinical cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, hemodynamics, cardiac radiology and coronary arteriography, interventional cardiology, and (especially) intravascular imaging and physiology. In 2005, Dr. Mintz published his single-authored textbook Intracoronary Ultrasound that has now been translated into Chinese. In 2014, Dr. Mintz received the Master of the Masters Career Achievement Award at the TCTAP-Cardiovascular Summit in Seoul, Korea; in 2015 Dr. Mintz received the Chien Foundation Outstanding Lectureship & Lifetime Achievement Award, also presented at TCTAP-Cardiovascular Summit in Seoul, Korea; in 2017 Dr. Mintz received the Outstanding Achievement Award at CBS 2017, Nanjing, China; in 2018 Dr. Mintz received the Career Achievement Award at NFIC in Krakow, Poland; and in 2020 Dr. Mintz received the Jiangsu Friendship Award from the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, China, the highest award presented to a non-Chinese. He also serves as a Senior Scientist and Advisor at the Medstar Cardiovascular Research Network, Washington, DC. Dr. Mintz completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and received his medical degree from Hahnemann University (now part of Drexel University), in 1974, both in Philadelphia, PA. He finished his internship in 1975, residency in 1976, and cardiology fellowship in 1978, each at Hahnemann University. He joined the Hahnemann University Department of Medicine faculty in 1978 and was ultimately promoted to Professor of Medicine in 1987 before joining CRF in 1991. His past appointments at CRF have included Chief Medical Officer and Editor-in-Chief (and one of the founders) of TCTMD.com.

Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Revascularisation Group Chair at Royal Brompton Hospital, London. His clinical focus is on use of intravascular imaging in complex PCI , CTO and cardiogenic shock. His clinical research interests focus on optical coherence tomography, calcific coronary disease and percutaneous ventricular support. Dr Hill was global co-chief investigator for the DISRUPT CAD III study and has served as UK principal investigator for multiple interventional trials. He has served as a CTO and complex PCI proctor on a global basis and works closely with OPTIMA to focus on the development of OPTIMAL PCI. He is the founding co-director of the Complete Revascularisation (CoRe) meetings held every year in London.

Allen Jeremias, MD, MSc, is the Director of Interventional Cardiology Research and Associate Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York. He is also a member of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York City where he currently serves as the Director of the Physiology Core Laboratory. He completed his medical training at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School. He has been a high volume interventional cardiologist since 2006 and recognized as a Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly. Dr. Jeremias has significantly contributed to advancing the field of interventional cardiology and he is considered one of the foremost authorities in coronary physiology and intravascular imaging. He is a co-director of the annual St. Francis Intravascular Imaging and Coronary Physiology Workshop, teaching physicians around the world on “Precision Angioplasty”. Dr. Jeremias is presently engaged in a major global study that could change the path of treating clogged arteries. Known as the ILUMIEN IV trial, this major clinical study is evaluating Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to guide coronary stent placement. He is also the principal investigator of DEFINE PCI, an international study on assessing the improvement in blood flow after stent placement for severe coronary blockages.

Dr. Michael S. Lee, is an interventional cardiologist, Associate Professor of Medicine and the Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at the UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Lee has published over 110 (over 70 of which were as first author) peer reviewed articles and chapters. He has also published on topics including antithrombotic therapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome and in percutaneous coronary intervention, protocols to establish heparin dosing regimens, and percutaneous coronary intervention for the treatment of left main disease, saphenous vein grafts, and cardiac allograft vasculopathy who have undergone orthotopic heart transplantation. He is one of the world’s authorities in coronary and peripheral orbital atherectomy.

Carlo Di Mario is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Florence and Director of the Structural 
Interventional Cardiology Division of the University Hospital Careggi, Florence, Italy. Previous posts included 15 years as Professor of Clinical Cardiology at Imperial College of Sciences, Medicine & Technology, London and Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Despite his teaching, research and administrative commitments, he maintains an active clinical involvement performing more than 100 PCI per year with special interest in the treatment of calcified lesions, chronic total occlusions, bifurcations, and diffuse disease. He is a regular TAVI operator and certified implanter for the Medtronic Evolut R and Edwards Sapien 3 transcatheter aortic valves. He participated in more than 160 MitraClip implantations in London and Florence and has recently started direct annuloplasty with the CardioBand. Professor Di Mario pioneered the use of intracoronary Doppler, pressure measurement, intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and near infrared spectroscopy. He was PI of the OPTICUS trial, failing to demonstrate superiority of IVUS guided stenting, and of the Lipid Rich Plaque study, due to report at TCT 2018. He was Principal Investigator of the DESTINI trial, using Doppler CRF to identify lesions in need of stenting, and of the CARESS in AMI trial, a large multicentre trial showing that patients who receive fibrinolytic therapy for ST-elevation myocardial infarction benefit from early angioplasty. This trial and a subsequent meta-analysis have led to a change in the European Society of Cardiology and AHA/ACC Guidelines for treatment of STEMI patients. He cooperated with Dr Davies to the validation of iFR to assess lesion severity and discriminate the contribution of individual lesions, and with Dr Lyon in the intracoronary delivery of SERCA-2 genes via adenoviral vectors in the CUPID2 trial.

Dr. James (Jamie) McCabe graduated magna cum laude from Bowdoin College and received his medical degree from Yale University. He completed 10 years of post-medical school training including internal medicine training and general cardiology fellowship at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and interventional cardiology fellowship as well as an advanced interventional fellowship in structural and peripheral treatments at Brigham and Women's Hospital / Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. McCabe is currently the Section Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Labs at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. He is a nationally recognized clinician educator and investigator in transcatheter therapies for valvular heart disease and coronary artery intervention.

Dr. Pinto received his B.A., cum Laude, from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and M.D. degree from the Georgetown University, cum Laude and Alpha Omega Alpha. He was an Intern, Resident, Chief Resident, General Cardiology Fellow and Interventional Cardiology Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA. Dr. Pinto is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Associate Chief of the Interventional Section and Director of the General Cardiology Fellowship Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has been awarded cardiology fellow teaching and mentorship awards from Harvard Medical School. His clinical expertise is in general and interventional cardiology. In addition to a busy outpatient practice, he performs coronary and peripheral angioplasty and stenting procedures. These include stenting and other procedures in the heart, leg, abdominal and neck arteries. Dr. Pinto has research interests in a wide variety of topics including acute myocardial infarction studies, unstable angina studies, interventional trials, peripheral interventional trials specializing in clinical outcome, comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness studies. Dr. Pinto is the editor of the Controversies in Cardiology section for Circulation. He is a manuscript reviewer for the New England Journal, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He has published over 75 articles in journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and JAMA. His work highlights the management and outcomes of patients with cardiac and vascular disorders.

Thomas Pappas, MD, is Director of St. Francis Hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. In this capacity, he has participated in numerous clinical trials evaluating novel coronary interventional devices. He is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College, practicing both interventional as well as consultative cardiology for the past 25 years at St. Francis Hospital. Dr. Pappas has consistently been recognized by Newsday and Castle Connolly as one of the top physicians on Long Island and has been selected as one of New York magazine’s Best Doctors.

Tom is a patient-centred Interventional Cardiologist at Gosford Hospital on Northern Sydney's Central Coast (NSW, Australia). He was born in Edinburgh and attended the University of Dundee graduating aged 22 with MBChB (Hons) receiving the Captain WA Low Prize and Medal as most distinguished graduate in Medicine. He emigrated to Australia 10 years ago after gaining the MRCP at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. In 2015, he completed his FRACP during advanced cardiology training in Sydney (Prince of Wales Hospital and St George Hospital). In 2019, Dr Ford returned from a three-year fellowship in Glasgow (Golden Jubilee National Hospital). This centre has the largest volume for coronary stents in the UK and his cardiology training in two continents exposed him to a high volume of interventional cardiology procedures including complex cardiac intervention, acute emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (i.e. emergency intervention for heart attack), advanced multimodal coronary imaging, structural heart interventions and novel invasive therapies for resistant hypertension. During his time in Glasgow, he developed his research interest in coronary artery disease performing an internationally recognized clinical trial involving invasive physiological testing for angina patients helping to improve their quality of life. His PhD was submitted in 2019 to the University of Glasgow and won the Bellahouston Medal as the highest distinction for the excellence of theses submitted for the degrees of MD, DDS and PhD. This work is directly relevant to help diagnose and manage patients with angina, chest pain and/or breathlessness. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and a Senior Lecturer at University of Newcastle (NSW). Dr Ford is an invited speaker and faculty at leading international cardiology scientific sessions including EuroPCR, Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT in USA) and European Society of Cardiology (ESC congress). His research has been published in leading cardiology journals and was recently recognized with two accolades including EuroPCR Best Abstract (Winner PCR’s Got Talent) and from the British Cardiac Society (‘Best of the Best’ Clinical Abstract – Interventional Cardiology). Outside of work, Tom is a golfer, surfer, runner and enjoys spending time with his wife (Naomi) and dog (Maisie).

Dr Rasha Al-Lamee is an Interventional Cardiology Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, UK. Dr Al-Lamee’s research interests are complex coronary intervention, coronary physiology and invasive intravascular assessment. She designed, conducted and led the ORBITA trial and is the lead author of the primary publication in The Lancet. At Imperial College, she is actively involved in the development and recruitment for a number of multi-centre clinical trials. Dr Al- Lamee has over 40 peer-reviewed publications and has presented at international Cardiology conferences worldwide throughout her clinical career. She studied at the University of Oxford and University College London. She went onto complete her training as a junior doctor on the Barts and the London Medical rotation before being appointed as a Specialist Registrar on the North West London Cardiology rotation in 2006. Dr Al-Lamee has twelve years of Cardiology experience and completed three years of Interventional Fellowship training at Hammersmith Hospital in London. She also spent a year training as an Interventional Fellow under the supervision of Professor Antonio Colombo in Milan. She completed specialist training in Cardiology in 2013.

Arnold Seto MD MPA is the Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at University of California, Irvine and Cath Lab Director at the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was an active participant in the DEFINE-FLAIR and DEFINE-PCI trials, and a steering committee member for DEFINE-PCI. He has published multiple manuscripts in coronary artery disease, coronary physiology, and vascular access especially in the areas of accurate measurement of FFR and ultrasound guidance for radial and femoral access.

Prof Javier Escaned is Head of Section (Interventional Cardiology Section) at Hospital Clinico San Carlos / Complutense University (Madrid, Spain). He trained in the United Kingdom as Specialist in Cardiology and obtained his PhD in The Netherlands. Author of >600 indexed scientific articles on interventional cardiology, imaging and physiology (h-index 74) and over 30 years of experience as PCI operator, he regularly lectures and performs live cases at major scientific and educational meetings. He is a recipient of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Silver Medal and the Andreas Grüntzig Award for his contributions to the fiedl fo Interventional Cardiology. Main areas of expertise include complex PCI, intracoronary diagnostics and functional coronary angiography. His track record in coronary physiology comprises being investigator on pioneer FFR trials like DEFER (1998), collaborator with Justin Davies in the validation and clinical implementation of iFR, and developer of new tools for the assessment of coronary microcirculation. Editorial roles include Deputy Editor EHJ, Advisory Editor Eurointervention, editor of the textbooks “Coronary Stenosis: Imaging, Structure and Physiology” and “Physiological Assessment of Coronary Stenoses and the Microcirculation". Dr Christopher Cook is a Medical Research Council Clinical Fellow at Imperial College London, undertaking a PhD in coronary physiology under the supervision of Dr Justin Davies. He studied Medicine at University College London (UCL) and graduated with Distinction (Clinical Medicine and Clinical Sciences) in his final MBBS Examinations in 2009. He achieved a First Class (Honours) Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology undertaking a period of research at The Hatter Cardiovascular Institute. He was awarded ‘The Dean’s List’ for outstanding performance in the Faculty of Life Sciences. In total he was awarded 17 prizes including the prestigious Gold Medal Medicine (proxime accessit). In 2014, he was awarded the Imperial Valve and Cardiovascular Course Young Investigator Prize. In 2015 he was awarded the inaugural EuroPCR’s Got Talent Award. In 2017 he was elected onto the EuroPCR Clinical Programme Committee.

Dr. William Fearon graduated from Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Stanford University Medical Center serving an extra year as a Medical Chief Resident. He completed a General Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology fellowship at Stanford, spending his third year as the Chief Cardiology Fellow. He is currently a Professor of Cardiology and Director of Interventional Cardiology at Stanford University School of Mediciner. Dr. Fearon is board certified in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology, and he is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Fearon’s primary area of research interest is in coronary physiology. He was the US principal investigator and senior author of the FAME trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine and was a co-principal investigator and senior author of the FAME 2 trial, also published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He is now the principal investigator of the international FAME 3 trial comparing bypass surgery to fractional flow reserve guided percutaneous coronary intervention. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, JACC Cardiovascular Interventions, and Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. He was the principal investigator on an R01 and is the PI on an R61/R33 NIH award evaluating cardiac allograft vasculopathy early after transplantation. Dr. Fearon’s clinical activities include not only percutaneous coronary intervention, but also transcatheter aortic valve replacement. He was a coauthor on the PARTNER 2A Trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Singh is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Director of Interventional Cardiology. He specializes in coronary and peripheral vascular interventional procedures and spends most of his time in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. His expertise is in complex coronary intervention and also the endovascular treatment of renovascular hypertension, and peripheral arterial occlusive diseases. In addition, he has been involved in research ranging from new coronary devices to intravascular ultrasound and pressure/flow assessment of coronary vessels. He is the Principal Investigator in several high profile multicenter trials evaluating the above. He is actively involved in resident/fellow education and rotate in the coronary care unit twice a year. He has two interventional fellows per year who work closely with him during their training, he also serves as their attending in ½ day in patient clinic. He has second and third year cardiology fellows involved in clinical research protocols in the cath lab and their work has produced three instrumental abstracts/papers which in the first 12 months were presented at major cardiovascular society meetings. Dr. Singh is also the Chairman of ARCH, one of the largest Midwest Interventional Symposium.

Dr Justin Davies is a honorary 
interventional cardiologist at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, London. After training at Imperial College, he won a prestigious BHF research fellowship to study arterial haemodynamics. Since then he has continued to
work on the development of mathematical algorithms to aid understanding of large artery physiology and to develop new tools to assess arterial disease. The holder of several patents,
he has published widely in the field of hypertension, coronary and large artery physiology and is the winner of many national and international awards. He has several international collaborations, and is the developer of iFR and the co-principal investigator of the ADVISE studies, the DEFINE-FLAIR, ORBITA and DEFINE-PCI studies. Justin also has an interest in renal denervation, and has lead the first-in-man studies to evaluate the safety of this technique to patients with chronic systolic heart failure (REACH studies).

Dr Sukhjinder Nijjer is a Consultant Cardiologist and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is the President of Cardiology at the Royal Society of Medicine and is the Communication Lead for the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society. He works at the Hammersmith Hospital as an Interventional Cardiologist and is an expert in Coronary Physiology. His PhD research focused on the development of instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) pullback and co-registration. He has published over 100 original academic papers and has involved in the DEFINE-FLAIR, SYNTAX-II and ORBITA-1 and ORBITA-2 research studies.

Ajay J. Kirtane, MD, SM, is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Kirtane is a graduate of Princeton University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California – San Francisco. Dr. Kirtane is a practicing Cardiologist with an interest in coronary and peripheral intervention and assumed the directorship of the NYP/Columbia cardiac catheterization laboratories in 2015. In addition to his clinical commitments at CUMC, Dr. Kirtane has a strong interest in clinical education and research, serving as Chief Academic Officer of the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy. On the national and international level, he is a co-director of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics meeting, has served as a director of several international, national, and regional educational meetings, and has participated on the program committees for the scientific sessions of both the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. Dr. Kirtane’s research interests are in clinical trial methodology and outcomes of device-based and pharmacologic interventions in Interventional Cardiology. He has authored/co-authored >150 original manuscripts and >50 reviews and chapters including the “Coronary Stenting” chapters of the two most widely used textbooks in Interventional Cardiology.

Director of Rescue the Heart Program, Director CTO, and Advanced Coronary Therapeutics, Morristown Medical Center Dimitrios Karmpaliotis, MD, PhD, FACC, FSCAI is Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Rescue and Recovery Program and the Advanced Coronary Therapeutics and Chronic Total Occlusions Program at Morristown Medical Center. Dr. Karmpaliotis was formerly at the Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy at Columbia University Medical Center, where he provided world-class care since 2014. He is a former associate professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical School and formerly served as director of the Chronic Total Occlusions, Complex and High-Risk Angioplasty Program at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.

George Petrossian, MD, is Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures at St. Francis Hospital, as well as Co-director of St. Francis Hospital’s Heart Valve Center. He is a board certified cardiologist and interventional cardiologist who has been a Principal Investigator for a number of nationwide studies that have transformed the treatment of heart disease. His pioneering research helped win FDA approval of CoreValve, a minimally invasive device that offers new hope for patients with aortic stenosis too frail to undergo open heart surgery. Dr. Petrossian has participated in multiple pivotal trials. His interests include left atrial appendage closure, and peripheral vascular disease.

Dr Giora Weisz is the Section-Head and director of the interventional cardiology program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. He also serves as faculty of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York. Dr Weisz graduated from the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel. He completed his cardiology fellowship training at the Carmel Medical Center-Technion School of Medicine in Haifa, Israel, and underwent advanced training in interventional cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital and the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York City. Dr Weisz is an internationally recognized researcher focused on innovative technologies in cardiovascular medicine. He has pioneered the use of novel robotic-enhanced coronary interventions, navigation and positioning technologies. Stephan Achenbach, MD, FSCCT is the Chairman of Cardiology and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Erlangen, Germany. His research interests focus on cardiovascular imaging, mainly computed tomography, for the early detection and characterization of coronary atherosclerosis and for the support of coronary and cardiovascular interventional procedures.

Dr. Giulio Guagliumi is the Director of the Interventional Cardiology Unit, Ospedale Papa Giovanni XXIII Bergamo, Italy. He was trained with Master in Interventional Cardiology at the Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse, France. He has a long-standing research expertise in complex coronary interventions, particularly with guidance of high-resolution intravascular imaging, acute myocardial infarction and stent vascular biology and response. He was awarded at Mayo Clinic and St. Mary Hospital, Rochester in imaging and coronary physiology assessment of vascular response to intracoronary stents. Dr. Guagliumi has authored 250 peer-reviewed publications in cardiovascular research and clinical trials across all prestigious cardiology journals. He is also author of chapters of the main Interventional Cardiology Textbooks (Topol-Teirsteen, IK Jang MGH, Scripps Clinic). He is fellow of the ESC, member of the executive board of EAPCI, and he was elected Secretary of the European Association of Interventional Cardiology (EAPCI) for the years 2016-2018. He was president of the Italian Society of Invasive Cardiology (GISE- 2009-2011), co-chair of the scientific program in interventional cardiology at the ESC Congress in the years 2012-2015. Dr. Guagliumi was acting as Co-PI of the European Union Grant, Seventh Framework FP7/2007-2013, HEALTH-F2-2010-260309 (PRESTIGE) for detecting mechanisms of stent thrombosis. Recently Dr. Guagliumi in cooperation with a restricted group of investigators won the European HORIZONS 2020 Research and Innovation programme for treatment of cardiogenic shock under the grant agreement No 754946 (EURO-SHOCK). Dr. Guagliumi is a pioneer in clinical use of light based imaging for evaluating coronary atherosclerosis and stenting. H’s involved in early stage evaluation of light based technologies and software innovations for the clinical use including OCT co-registration with coronary angiography.

After completing his M.D. at Tulane Medical School, Bill Lombardi went on to the University of Utah, Salt Lake City for his internal medicine residency and fellowships in cardiology, heart failure/cardiac transplant, and interventional cardiology. Dr. Lombardi then returned home to Washington State and joined St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. During the 13 years that he was at St. Joseph’s, Dr. Lombardi helped to develop novel CTO techniques and technologies and was fundamental to the inception of the “hybrid algorithm” to facilitate reproducibly successful outcomes in chronic total occlusion and complex lesion PCI. During this time he was also active in physician training, CME courses and proctoring. Dr. Lombardi joined the University of Washington Medical Center in 2014 as associate clinical professor and director of the Complex Coronary Disease Therapies Program. He is certified in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Lombardi's interests include sailing, fishing, and spending time with family.

Emmanouil S. Brilakis, MD, PhD, FACC, FAHA, FESC, FSCAI is Director of the Center for Complex Coronary Interventions at the Minneapolis Heart Institute and Chairman of the Center for Coronary Artery Disease at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. After graduating from Lycee Leonin de Patissia, Dr. Brilakis received his medical degree from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He trained in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic. He also completed a Masters in Clinical Research at the Mayo Clinic and a PhD in Clinical Research at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He served as director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories at VA North Texas Health Care System from 2004-2016. He was on the faculty of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School from 2004-2018. Dr. Brilakis leads a large clinical trial group investigating treatment of chronic total occlusions, prevention and treatment of saphenous vein graft disease, prevention and management of complications, intracoronary imaging, antiplatelet treatment optimization post coronary stenting, radiation safety in the catheterization laboratory, and implementation of novel technologies in healthcare. Dr. Brilakis has authored or co-authored over 600 manuscripts and has written the Manual of CTO Interventions, now in its second edition. He directs the Complex Coronary Interventions Webcast series and is on the Board of the Cardiovascular Innovations Foundation. He is an associate editor for Circulation and an editorial board member and reviewer for several journals and grant agencies. He is lecturing and proctoring at several institutions in the United States and abroad.

Dr. David E. Kandzari is the Chief of the Piedmont Heart Institute and Cardiovascular Service Line; Director, Interventional Cardiology of the Piedmont Heart Institute; and Chief Scientific Officer for Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Kandzari specializes in cardiovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease and interventional cardiology. A graduate of Duke University School of Medicine, he completed his internship and residency at The John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his residency, he completed his general and interventional cardiology fellowship at Duke University where he joined the faculty as the John B. Simpson Assistant Professor of Interventional Cardiology and Genomic Sciences. Dr. Kandzari is the former Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. Before joining the Scripps faculty, he also served as Chief Medical Officer for the Cordis Corporation, a Johnson & Johnson Company. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Disease and Board of Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Kandzari has held national and international leadership roles in clinical trials in cardiovascular disease and has participated in national and international program committees in cardiology. He has authored and coauthored more than 400 studies, book chapters and scientific reviews, and has delivered more than 700 lectures, both nationally and internationally, on a variety of issues related to both interventional and general cardiology. Prof Goran Stankovic is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Head of the Department of Cardiology, Clinical Center of Serbia and Chief of Invasive Diagnostics and Interventional Cardiology. Prof. Stankovic was awarded Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) in 2003, and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) in 2005. He has been a member of European Association for Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (EAPCI) since 2007 and is currently a member of the EAPCI Nominating Committee. He has been one of the founding members and is currently the president of the European Bifurcation Club, and a member of the Asian and Indian Bifurcation Clubs. Professor Stankovic serves on the editorial boards of Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Eurointervention, European Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Advances in Interventional Cardiology Journal, and Heart and Blood Vessels – Journal of Cardiology Society of Serbia. For the consecutive years 2005-2014 Professor Stankovic was awarded Elite Reviewer for Journal of American college of Cardiology. In 2009 he received Simon Dack Award for outstanding Scholarship from the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

Hector M. Garcia-Garcia, MD, PhD, is now serving as an attending cardiologist for MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute and director of the Coronary Invasive Imaging Core Lab. Prior to joining the MHVI medical staff, Dr. Garcia-Garcia served as Director of the Core Lab of Invasive Imaging at Cardialysis—a leading cardiology clinical research organization—and as researcher at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Inselspital in Bern, Switzerland. He received both a Master’s and Doctorate degree from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. Paul J. Lee, M.D., earned his medical degree at SUNY Buffalo in 1994. He completed his residency at Montefiore Medical Center continuing at North Shore-Long Island Jewish, then completed his Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in 2002. He joined South Bay Cardiovascular in 2002, performing cardiac interventions at Good Samaritan and Southside Hospitals. In 2009, South Bay Cardiovascular affiliated with St. Francis Hospital, becoming one of the largest and most respected cardiovascular practices in the region. Dr. Lee specializes in treatment of complex coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease and TAVR procedures.

Dr. Issam D. Moussa is Medical Director of the Carle Heart & Vascular Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at Carle Illinois College of Medicine, University of Illinois-UC. Dr. Moussa experience prior to joining Carle Heart & Vascular Institute spanned academic medicine, clinical outcome research, and medical device development. He served as Professor & Clinical Chief of Cardiology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in New Brunswick, New Jersey; Professor & Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic, Florida; Director of Endovascular Service at the Divisions of Cardiology - New York Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia and Cornell Universities; and Director of Interventional Cardiology Research at Lenox Hill Heart & Vascular Institute in New York City. As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Moussa specializes in performing complex catheter-based cardiovascular procedures in patients with coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Dr. Moussa has been a prolific clinical investigator, he has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles in prominent medical journals and has participated in over 100 clinical trials. His clinical research activities spanned the fields of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and structural heart disease. Dr. Moussa has held numerous leadership positions in the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. Dr. Moussa has been on the forefront of cardiovascular medical technology development as an innovator, clinical investigator, and an entrepreneur. Ron Waksman, MD, FACC, Associate Director, Division of Cardiology, MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) and Director of Cardiovascular Research and Advanced Education for the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. With nearly 20 years of experience in leading edge medical technologies, Dr. Waksman is a world-renowned interventional cardiologist and is a highly sought after Principal Investigator for pre-clinical and clinical studies conducted in the United States and abroad. Dr Waksman has performed over 5000 coronary interventions throughout his career.

Dr. Bruce Samuels is an interventional cardiologist on staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Samuels completed his medical studies at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York before returning to Southern California to complete his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. At CSMC, he trained in both general and interventional cardiology before joining the medical staff there. Dr. Samuels is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology. He is married with three sons; his outside interests include contemporary art and long distance running.

Hiram Bezerra, MD, PhD, is Director, Cardiovascular Imaging Core Laboratory as well as Director, Director, Advanced Coronary and MCS at University Hospital Cleveland Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor, Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Previously, he served at Massachusetts General Hospital with extensive expertise in Cardiac Imaging, Interventional Cardiology, Optical Coherence Tomography and Computed Tomography.

Dr. Bangalore is an interventional cardiologist and a Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. His other areas of interest include comparative effectiveness of coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) vs. percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), evaluating the efficacy and safety of various stent types in patients undergoing PCI, including patients with diabetes and those in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction and comparative effectiveness of drug eluting stents vs. bare metal stents. He has won a number of awards including the Dr. Gregory Braden Memorial Interventional Cardiology Fellow of the Year Award from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention and the Douglas P. Dr. Farouc Jaffer graduated from Stanford University in 1990 with a B.S. in Mathematical and Computational Sciences, and received in MD and PhD in Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania of Medicine in 1996. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
