Transcatheter Heart Valves (THV) Summit – Day 1

Nicolas Van Mieghem is the Clinical Director of Interventional Cardiology and Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam. He obtained his medical degree and cardiology degree at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. After subsequent Fellowships in interventional cardiology in at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg Genk, Belgium, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, United States and Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he joined the senior staff of the department of interventional cardiology in the Thoraxcenter in February 2010. Professor Van Mieghem’s academic interest is in complex (calcified) coronary lesions, mechanical circulatory support and structural heart interventions. He obtained a PhD based upon his research in transcatheter valve therapies. Professor Van Mieghem is involved in the percutaneous coronary interventions and structural heart program. Professor Van Mieghem has published and co-authored over 400 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is principle investigator and steering committee member in multiple ongoing international trials evaluating various coronary and transcatheter valve technologies. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology.

Professor Rajesh Kharbanda is a Consultant Cardiologist Oxford University Hospitals, UK with over 20 years of experience in treating patients with a wide range of heart conditions including angina, valve disease, heart failure and irregular heart rhythm. He has special expertise in the treatment of coronary artery disease by coronary angioplasty and stenting including complex angioplasty techniques as well as Structural Heart interventions. He has published and co-authored over 240 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and actively involved in international trials evaluating various coronary and transcatheter valve technologies.

Professor Ian Meredith is the Executive Vice President and Global Chief Medical Officer at Boston Scientific. Previously professor and director of Monash Heart, and executive director of the Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, Professor Meredith has over 25 years of experience as a clinical and interventional cardiologist. Professor Meredith has been a member of the Board of the National Heart Foundation (Australia) and a member of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand National Board. In 2019, Professor Meredith received a Doctor Laws honoris causa from Monash University for distinguished and exceptional service to the field of medicine and healthcare.

Professor Helge Möllmann is the Director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine (Cardiology) at St. Johannes Hospital - Dortmund, Germany. He has authored over 520 publications and is a member of the German Society for Cardiology (DGK), Interventional Cardiology Working Group of the DGK, Nucleus member European Society of Cardiology (ESC), German Mitral Valve Steering Committee and German Aortic Valve Executive Board.

Dr. Kristoff Cornelis is interventional cardiologist at AZ Maria Middelares – Ghent, Belgium. He is an interventional cardiologist specialized in endovascular treatments of valve problems, hypertension and congenital heart defects in adults. He is also a member of the Belgian Work Group of Interventional Cardiology (BWGIC), of the Belgian Society of Cardiology (BSC) and of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)

Dr Vedat Tiyerili is the senior physician in charge, specialist in internal medicine, cardiology and angiology at St.-Johannes-Hospital Dortmund. His expertise lies in Intensive and emergency medicine, interventional cardiology and heart failure.

David Hildick-Smith is an interventional Cardiologist of national and international renown. He undertakes procedures such as angioplasty, patent foramen ovale closure, atrial septal defect closure, left atrial appendage occlusion, transcatheter valve implantation and transcatheter mitral valve interventions. He does echocardiography onsite for relevant patients. He undertakes over 300 interventions per year at the Sussex Cardiac Centre and is Structural Heart lead for the British Cardiovascular Interventions Society.

Dr. Won-Keun Kim Director of Structural Heart Disease / TAVI at the Kerckhoff Heart Center, Bad Nauheim, Germany. He has received several awards, including the AGIK Publication Award in 2014, and the Best Abstract Award TCTAP and Publication Award Freunde und Förderer der Kerckhoff-Klinik eV in 2015. DR Kim has contributed to more than 200 publications and actively involved in multiple trials and registries.

Professor Giuseppe Tarantini is an Associate Professor and interventional cardiologist at University of Padua, Italy. Since 2016, he Director of the Interventional Cardiology Unit at the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Sciences of Padua University, performing both coronary and structural interventional cardiology procedures. He has promoted more than 50 observational registries and clinical trials and published more than 390 original papers. He is also President of the Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology–GISE and a member of the leading International Cardiology societies.

Dr. Stefan Toggweiler is the co-head of Cardiology, head of Interventional Cardiology and of Interventional Valve Therapy at Heart Center Lucerne, Luzerner Kantonsspital. He has performed more than 1000 TAVI and 250 mitral procedures. Dr. Toggweiler has published on safety and efficacy of TAVI, conduction disorders, pacemakers, vascular complications, and mitral/tricuspid valve disease in well renowned journals.

Dr Fadi J. Sawaya is the Director of the Structural Heart Program at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). His expertise and clinical interest lies in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), mitral clip, left atrium appendage occlusion, paravalvular leak closure, atrial septal defects/patent foramen ovale closures and chronic total occlusion interventions. Dr Sawaya is also Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).

Dr. Radoslaw Parma is an interventional cardiologist at Medical University of Silesia – Katowice, Poland. He is member of the European Commission expert panels in the field of medical devices and also co-chair of the EAPCI Training Committee at European Society of Cardiology.

Dr. Raúl Moreno is an interventional cardiologist and Director of Interventional Cardiology at Hospital La Paz – Madrid, Spain. He has authored more than 300 articles on interventional cardiology and, with respect to this topic, he also have taken part into a large number of multi-centered studies. He is President of Asociación de Cardiología Intervencionista (ACI-SEC).

Prof. Dr. med. Sabine Bleiziffer is a Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Herz- und Diabeteszentrum NRW in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany. She is head of the Structural Heart Program. The interdisciplinary center organization at the Herz- and Diabeteszentrum is most beneficial for the individual patient in terms of diagnosis, risk evaluation, choice of patient-tailored intervention and postprocedural treatment. With the active participation of cardiologists and surgeons, approximately 900 transcatheter valve procedures are performed yearly. Being convinced of the relevance of the surgical part of the heart team, her credo is to achieve the most benefitial approach for the patient in a interdisciplinary setting.

Professor Thomas Cuisset is a senior interventional cardiologist at the Cardiology Unit at La Timone Hospital in Marseille, France. Prof Cuisset is a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and an active member of the ESC Working Group on Thrombosis.
