Robert Guyton

Dr. Robert A. Guyton is a Professor of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine and Director of the Cardiothoracic Research Laboratory of the Carlyle Fraser Heart Center. He was Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory and Director of the Thoracic Residency Program from 1990 to 2017. He has participated in the training of over 140 cardiothoracic surgeons at Emory. He received the Socrates Awards for teaching from the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association in 2009 anf the Surgery Mentoring Award in 2012 from the American Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia. He was on the Board of Trustees of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for 10 years and served as President in 2003-4. He received that organization's Distinguished Service Award in 2016. He susequently was on the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology for nine years and served as Treasurer from 2014 to 2017, receiving that organization's Distinguished Service Award in 2016 and Presidential Citation in 2017. He is currently an active cardiac surgeon, investigator, and educator at Emory Univerity Hospital Midtown with a special interest in functional mitral regurgitation.
